Universities will give special support to students with diabetes. For exams, make sure you are allowed to use your phone for your insulin pump or glucose sensor if needed. They need to allow this (if not, please contact us to let us know).

When in doubt, ask your personal tutor for advice. This is the best person to point you in the right direction for finding help.

Do not wait until your exams start with finding out how these things work. It is best to have a conversation with your personal tutor. Many departments will have a person dealing with special health conditions, find out who it is and schedule an appointment with them. You can do this at the beginning of the year. Just inform them that you have diabetes and ask them what they can do to support you better.

Separate room

When you have exams and you need access to your mobile phone to check glucose or control your insulin pump, ask to be allowed to sit in separate room. This should be allowed. If this is an issue, ask your GP to write a letter to your exams team or department.

Exceptial circumstances

When you cannot finish your coursework in time, you can request to be treated specially. Whether or not this will be accepted depends on the exact reason, but if you felt unwell due to diabetes, you will need to put this on exceptional circumstances form. They might ask for medical evidence. You could ask your GP for this.

Extra time

If needed, you might be allowed extra time durig exams. Discuss this with your personal tutor.
