Find doctor

When you go to university, find out where your nearest GP (i.e., family doctor) is.

Check if there is a GP practise close to university or possibly even on campus.

Register

Register at the GP so that they can prescribe your medication. As the new medical centre for your diabetes review. Once they know you are new, they will sort it out for you.

International students

International students with diabetes should definitely register with the NHS as well. Even if you still receive medication from abroad, you need a local medical team for regular reviews and so on. If unsure, just contact your local GP and ask. They will definitely be able to advice.

Multiple GPs

If needed, you can be registered with different medical teams. If you think this is best for you, ask your GP how this works.

Specialist team

Every region has a specialist diabetes team. They can help with additional things:

  • Find out the best possible insulin given your situation

  • Help you with technology, such as sensors, pumps, needles, etc

  • Questions about your food and diet

  • Help with exercise.

Ask your new GP surgery how to contact the local diabetes specialist service or figure it out yourself online. It might be good to see them even if you think everything is going reasonably smoothly. Diabetes medication and technology develops quickly, who knows what they can do for you.
